OVERVIEW
WHAT ARE WE TRYING TO SOLVE?
Retail Hub needs a flexible, scalable, and more durable permissions model that will not only adapt to the changing needs of the business (as roles and responsibilities of employees get collapsed, or new roles are created), but can quickly scale to other areas of the Nordstrom business, such as Inventory, Merchandising, Finance etc. In the future, this new permissions model can also extend to third party vendors and suppliers.
The goal is to design a system that manages access to data, by capturing important information about our employees: their roles, responsibilities (jobs they do/the work), and tools they use. Today, Retail Hub’s current permission model is based on email invites and specific access to tools.
OUR APPROACH TO A SOLUTION
I partnered with my design lead to create a new data model or information architecture framework to capture and store all the information on our employees (roles, responsibilities, and tool access).
SKETCHING + EXPLORATION
Before going immediately to designing, I sat down with my lead designer to brainstorm WHAT tasks our users would be doing day to day to not only maintain current permissions, but also creating new ones, adding new responsibilities or removing them. We also brainstormed what the manager’s experience would look like in assigning their direct reports the correct areas of responsibility and correct roles. I drew out logic flows for myself to make sure that the data model we were proposing made sense and covered edges cases.

CONCEPT PITCH
Created a pitch deck illustrating the data structure and information architecture we designed to store all of the role, responsibility, and tool information. This data model is scalable across all different business domains of Nordstrom, and can serve as a flexible way to maintain permissions control and tool access control.
